It was after 9 pm on a Wednesday and despite the fact that we were promised a dry night, it hadn't ceased raining! James and me were sitting going over the recent football results, waiting around for the next telephone call to come in. Before long we had a call from a lovely woman on a company expedition who had arrived at the Tesco petrol garage in East Butterwick and put petrol in her diesel friend's Isuzu Ascender lease car. The poor thing was fairly irritated it seemed, saying "I simply can't believe I've messed up the vehicle! I am so used to putting unleaded in my petrol car that I totally forgot I was using a diesel!" I just asked her to calm down and not to worry, also that these things regrettably often happen. She managed to relocate the car into a safe position and, seeing as it was only a few minutes from the office, we were able to get to the woman quickly. The contaminated fuel was removed so she could get back to the Premier Inn she was residing in. Even though we got pretty soaked, it was all worth the time seeing her drive off satisfied and less worried. One more misfuel correction in Lincolnshire well done in my mind!

The 3 things you MUST know about a Misfuel!

AdBlue In Diesel

All around Lincolnshire we are encountering more and more instances of AdBlue contamination where a person has poured AdBlue directly into their diesel tank. This is to some extent as a result of people not being totally sure the right way to work with it (remember: it is in actual fact not a fuel additive), and in part simply because the filler caps for diesel and AdBlue are usually directly near to one another on the car.

So, what is the matter with putting AdBlue in a diesel car?

Seeing as the product is mainly deionised water, it is actually just like putting water into your tank. Diesel and water do not ever blend at all and trying to run a diesel car on water cannot work. In addition, the urea is highly corrosive to fuel system lines and seals and is more prone to crystalising, clogging injectors and fuel filters. If in case you poured AdBlue in your fuel tank remove it asap. And most certainly don't crank the motor - not even to shift it to a parking area. In cases where you did start the vehicle you will in all likelihood need to have the complete fuel system purged and filters replaced.

In the event that you discover yourself to be in this scenario don’t fret or panic! Contact us, the UK’s Number 1 fuel contamination company. Our engineers possess the technical knowledge and experience to have you back on the road promptly and efficiently, without mess or hassle.

How to find out if I put the wrong fuel in my car?

If you’ve just filled up at a petrol station and the cars starts to act a bit strange you might start to wonder if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in it.

Well, there are a few things to can check that will be able to tell you:

  1. How is the car responding? There are some very common misfuel symptoms which can be a good indicator of wrong fuel:
    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
    • Won’t start – or keeps stalling.
  2. Look at your fuel receipt. It will state clearly if you filled up with diesel or unleaded. If you don’t have the receipt, you can often return to the petrol station where you filled up and give them the date and time (and pump) where you refueled and they will often be able to give you a VA receipt.
  3. Smell it. Diesel and petrol have very distinctly different smells. Anyone familiar with the motor industry should be able to help you with this. Or you could even get another car to park alongside and smell the fuel caps of both, comparing them to determine what the fuel type is.
  4. Call us to come out and assess the car. In the majority of cases we will be able to tell if the car has been misfueled before beginning work on it. If we discover that the vehicle does not need a fuel drain, you will only be charged a call-out fee.
